10 things you should always remember to nail your interview!

  1. Dress to impress, if this is a client facing role chances are they will require you to act and look professional. My advice, check with the recruiter, find out what the company dress code is and dress accordingly. You want the client to picture you representing their business to their clients.
  2. Always and I repeat always check the travel the night before, speak to the recruiter and ask them about the local traffic near your interview location around your interview time. Use online maps to plan your routes and check parking or bike store arrangements prior to your interview. Leave plenty of time to get there and sus everything out.
  3. Research, research and more research! You MUST look at the company’s website and make sure you understand exactly what they do, look online and check news articles to find points of interest about the business. They may have recently won an award or completed a project. All of this information you can use and it will demonstrate you are interested in them.
  4. Ensure you check in at the company’s reception and remember, your interview starts with the very first person you meet as you walk in the door! Smile, greet the receptionist and make sure you ask for the person you have arrived to see with both first and last name.
  5. First impressions, shake hands and greet your interviewer, make eye contact with them (this shows confidence) once you have seated, place a copy of your CV in front of you. The way you do this will say a lot about you. For example, if your CV document is crumpled and torn or folded in your pocket, compared to in a plastic wallet, presenter or folder.
  6. Some questions asked by clients aren’t looking for the correct answer, if you don’t know, just say. Clients react far more positively to an honest up front answer than a waffle around the point. Often clients will ask certain types of questions to hear your thought process. If asked tell me about a time when you – Think, beginning middle and end.
  7. Use your experience – Demonstrate in your answers the relevance to the requirement and your previous positions. Using sentences like; During my time with XXX I was tasked with
  8. Towards the end of your interview clients will ask if you have any questions, this is your time to shine. Simple thought out question will work best. For example, questions around information you have read up about the business online, questions enquiring about the team you would be working in and how they like to work. I have had candidates snatch the role from another just by asking the right questions.
  9. Make sure you call your agent as soon as you can after your interview to give them your feedback.  Believe it or not this is so important, clients will call agencies after they have met you and will ask them what your feedback is.
  10. Above all enjoy yourself, finding a new role can be daunting at first but it’s a great opportunity to find a position and a company you really want to work for!
