You’ve got the offer you have been waiting for!

Starting a new role in a dynamic social environment like an office can be daunting for anyone, no matter how many times you have done it. It is normal to feel a little anxious. We have put below some friendly advice for you on surviving the dreaded notice hand in, to making it through your first week, we’ve got you covered!

The excitement is often followed by terror when you realise the next step following your offer acceptance is to hand in your notice. It’s not such a big deal! The average person changes job 10 to 15 times in their career!

Always do this in a positive professional way, never hand in your notice when you are angry! Focus on the positives of your time working with the business, but don’t feel like you have to give a reason for leaving if you don’t want to and always confirm your notice period and agree your last working day.

Remember it isn’t personal, you are leaving to progress your career or because you are moving on to an opportunity which will improve your life. All these are positives.  When you hand in your notice ensure this is in written form as well as verbal.  What you chose to write is entirely up to you, you can find lots of templates online to follow if you are stuck.

So you’ve got though the meeting and your last day is near, when working your notice be as helpful as possible, help colleagues, make coffee and complete all of the tasks asked of you including a hand over if required.

Your 1st day, alongside thinking about what to wear, what time to arrive, where to park and who takes sugar?

There are lots of things to think about on your 1st day.  Start every new role with an open mind, listen and take in as much as you can from the people around you. Keep your expectations low and be prepared to adapt. Give yourself enough time to get settled at your new work station so arrive 10/15 minutes early.

Often on a first day you will complete an induction process, use this time to take notes and ask questions, whether it’s on a system you will be using or current projects… knowledge is power!

Concentrate, with so much going on this is easy to forget. Reply to emails correctly, engage and add value in team meetings and keep energised.

Don’t speak badly about your previous employer, no matter what the situation, this can give your new colleagues and boss a bad impression of you. Be calm, happy and helpful. Offer to make tea and coffee for your team and say hello and get to know your fellow work colleagues.

Above all else enjoy yourself! You were successful in securing this role, so show them what you can do!

Good luck with your first week!
