The Do’s and Don’ts for Cover Notes!
Job hunters after a few weeks, generally will start to use a template when applying for jobs. This is of course an efficient way to get your CV in for as many adverts as possible but if you stop and think for a second…
Your generic Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to apply to your _______ advert cover letter will not cut it when other applicants follow a few simple rules which mean they have a successful and all round more effective job search.
Rule 1
Call in and find out who you should address the covering note or email to? Writing to the correct person will firstly make sure your email is seen and also show interest.
Rule 2
Never send a standard template letter/email of interest. Tailor it to the advert for example.
Hi Ashley,
Please find attached my application for the Graphic Designer role, I have read through your advert and can confirm I have 2 years’ experience with Graphic Design with both print and web.
Please check out my online portfolio at www.checkitout.portfolio where you can see my most recent projects. From your company website I can see we have a similar style! I am keen to join a growing design agency like yours and I make a great cup of coffee! Please don’t hesitate to get in contact.
Rule 3
Don’t for get to put your contact details on your application, we receive so many CVs without a contact number or even email. This is the most important rule to remember, you could have an interview request and never know!
Rule 4
If you are job searching be aware of your content on social media, more often than not a client will check you online presence and might even look on your Facebook. So something to keep in mind when you are looking for a new role. LinkedIn is a great one, recommendations will give a client confidence in your ability before they meet with you.
Rule 5
Show your character! Be inspiring, you may have been searching for a new role for weeks or even months but a client’s search for you might have only just begun. Motivated, passionate people find work. Clients will look for these qualities after all, would you?
